A Collage

I was asked by a visitor to to my photography website,  www.heathercote.com to see some photos of my jewelry...I prefer to keep my photography website separate from this site so I'm posting the collage below...
Sadly I don't have any photos of my newer pieces, what didn't sell at my last show was shipped to the Art Gallery in Sudbury!   I've put together a collage of older pieces, those of you who visit here know I'm terrible about taking photos of new work, which I do regret...but it is such a frustrating process for me.   Most of you will have seen these before ...I always take a bit of a hiatus,in the winter so I've nothing new to show till mid March... not intentional... my creativity takes a break and I've learned over the years it doesn't produce great pieces to force the issue...

Cheers

Copper is new again!

When I first began working with metal, about 4 years ago, I introduced copper to my customers but at the time there wasn’t much interest in the metal as a component of jewelry.    So I forgot about it for a while, and then tried again but still no interest until the beginning of this season.
Scraps accumulated since May 2012
Surprisingly, I’ve had many customers ask for copper pieces.    I’m happy about this as it allows me another affordable metal from which I can make pendants, earrings and cuffs.  I’ve used copper sheet a great deal this season, and will eventually get to copper wire.

The name copper is from the Latin word cuprum, which means "from the island of Cyprus", and is man’s oldest metal, dating back some 10,000 years.
Large deposits of copper ore are located in the United States, Chile, Zambia, Zaire, Peru and Canada.  It is a soft metal to which either brass or bronze is added.

Copper wire is used in large amounts in electrical wire as it is highly conductive …with only silver more so.    With the high cost of silver it makes more sense to use copper for electrical purposes as it is considerably less expensive.

For many years, from 1942 to 1996, the Canadian penny was made from 98% copper, with varying amounts of tin and zinc additives.    From 2000 to 2012 the penny has been made from 94% steel, 1.5% nickel and 4.5% copper plating.

As I’m sure you are aware many other items are either made from or have components made from copper, pots, pans, kettles, bowls, telephone wiring, fridges, dryer, microwaves, automobiles have approximately 50 pounds of copper, while your average sized home has approximately 400 pounds of copper for such things as electrical wiring, water pipes and appliances.
I found all kinds of very detailed information regarding copper and how it is processed and used  but for my purposed that is going a bit to in depth…suffice it to say copper is one of man’s best friends, we have a multitude of uses for this metal.

Check out this website http://www.copper.org/education/homepage.html for more detailed, interesting information about copper.

Copper has been known for centuries to have an antimicrobial effect regarding infections.  It is said to be the most effective product for “touch surfaces” in hospitals…specific surfaces are being converted to copper allowing for an 87% reduction in infections in certain hospitals in the USA.  This conversion is in the beginning stages and is touted as a contributing factor in preventing infections in hospitals.    The antimicrobial effects was surprising to me, it is still being researched… I’d like to see what this eventually leads to.

I’m one of those people who’s skin will tarnish if I wear copper…this is because of a reaction to either the acids on my skin or from lotion or soap on my copper piece.  Copper isn’t the only metal that can do this even sterling silver or gold can depending on your skin, etc, so simply avoiding inexpensive jewelry isn’t all ways going to prevent issues.   It is possible to be irritated by any metal that causes a green or dark ring around your finger.    If you are prone to green or dark rings, or irritation issues it is a good idea to remove your copper jewelry when washing or swimming, as well as keep lotions, soaps and chemicals away from your jewelry.   Some people find applying a barrier such as a polymer coating or nail polish helpful to prevent these issues…nail polish will have to be reapplied every once in a while as it will wear off.     Another thought to decrease the possibility of a reaction is to decrease your intake of acidic food and drink, although I think for most people this would be a bit of a nuisance just to wear a piece of jewelry.  Keeping your jewelry clean and tarnish free is a great way to start.
I’m sure you may have known much of this information, but do not think about it in your day to day life.   Why would you unless you work with copper.   I never think about all the great ways to utilize this metal …I use copper to make jewelry, having said that I’m sure now I will think about all the other possibilities while I’m cutting, filing, hammering, stamping and finishing my copper jewelry!

As we all know, the one drawback to copper jewelry is the fact it tarnishes very easily…the lovely copper shine turns to a green/black dull finish…what is happening is it forms corrosion due to the oxygen in the air…the good thing is once it has covered the surface with tarnish it is finished and acts as a protection to the copper piece.   There are a number of ways to slow down/prevent the tarnish…
This cuff was made over two years ago and you can see the tarnish on it...sold like this though.
  • ·         When not wearing a piece seal in a baggy making sure to eliminate the air, if you have any silica gel desiccant packets from previous purchases , the ones you get in shoe boxes, these work well in the baggy to prevent tarnish!  I have “anti tarnish tabs” that also work nicely.
  • ·         Apply a coat of Renaissance Wax; this is a microcrystalline food safe wax from England.  This I’ve used on occasion, but it is a wax and won’t last forever.
  • ·         Apply a coat of Proctectaclear…something I’m going to try.  Non toxic when dry, coating to last 10 years…sounds very good to me.
  • ·         Apply nail polish but this will have to be done often as it wears of very easily.
  • ·         If your pieces do happen to tarnish use one of the soft jewelry cleaning cloths that can be purchased at any jewelry counter…I also sell these cloths.  You will have to rub hard but they will clean your copper…at least I know my cloths will.

Copper & silver fold forming cuffs made almost 2 years ago...silver one sold right away the copper sold 3 weeks ago!
I enjoy working with copper equally as well as silver products and this coming week I’m going to try a new patina product to color the metal…watch for photos in the coming weeks…or better yet stop by at the Market and take a look!

Don’t forget questions and comments are welcome…

NOTE:  I would like to thank all the wonderful people who ventured out to the Corn Festival at the North Bay Farmers’ Market this past Saturday, August 11th…it was supposed to be a very wet day with 90% chance of thunderstorms from mid morning on.   My daughter and I didn’t expect many people at the Market for this reason… it turned out to be one of the busier Market days I’ve seen this season!
Thanks for visiting…

What is Silver Filled and why I use it!

This post will explain why I’ve been using “silver filled” metals since May of 2012.
As people know the price of sterling silver fluctuates, it has steadily increased, albeit slowly since January of 2004.  I began working with silver in 2008…at this time the cost per ounce began a more aggressive increase until the prices peaked in September of 2011.   As of the writing of this post silver is still approximately 125% higher per ounce than it was when I made my first purchase in 2008.  This of course is why the public has seen increases in the cost of handmade silver pieces from Artisans.   There will always be those people who will buy silver jewelry regardless of the cost…but… for many people the cost of silver jewelry, while considerably improved is still too expensive.   Retail stores offer silver plated items for much less which makes it understandable why people gravitate to something more affordable.
With the “more affordable” idea in mind I decided this year to give a new product a try…”silver filled” sheet and wire.     In March of 2011 I heard about “silver filled” products from a friend, and briefly mentioned the product on my blog in the spring of 2011.   I purchased wire then stored it away, partly because it was new and I felt I had to wait bit to see how
it held up.
In November of 2011 I purchased “silver filled sheet and wire”… which I also stored away until this spring when I began preparing for the opening of the North Bay Farmers Market. As this was a new product at the time, they only offered “silver filled” sheet, silver clad on one side…the other side has the brass (90% copper, 10%zinc) exposed, which wasn’t a concern my customers.   Even though I was aware of this product for over a year I wanted to make sure it was something that would stand the test of time before I introduced my customers to it this spring.

My “silver filled” jewelry has been well received… selling itself…the reason being, it is relatively shiny, can be lightly hammered, stamped, sanded, soldered and tumbled like sterling silver, which allows me to offer earrings and pendants with the same look as the sterling silver  pieces.   It isn’t as sparkling as sterling but it definitely is worth the cost.  I recently purchased the double clad silver filled sheet, which they didn’t have the first time I ordered…(sterling silver on both sides)I must say I’m considering continuing to work with the one side sterling silver sheet, it allows people to tell the difference at a glance.

I explain “silver filled” in the following way to my customers …a layer of brass to which a layer of sterling silver has been permanently bonded…it will not wear off!  Like sterling silver it will tarnish so keep your pieces in a baggie with an anti tarnish tab, or clean gently with a cleaning cloth.  As with silver avoid exposing your pieces to hairspray or other harsh chemicals.  This product gives the look of sterling silver without the cost!

Below is an explanation from Rio Grande which gives the technical description.

I will always work with sterling, argentium and fine silver as they are my favorite mediums… there are customers who prefer their jewelry made from sterling silver…but… the “silver filled” product fills a niche in the market…one I’m happy to be able to accommodate!

I will be doing a post soon to explain the difference between sterling silver, Argentium silver and fine silver as many of my customers ask me that question on a regular basis.

Something different

When I go to shows/markets I try to come up with something for the younger crowd...such as... stretchy ringed bracelets, leather cord bracelets, age appropriate pendants, or earrings... something simple, while in their price range!

This year I chose feathers for my last few shows and the teenagers liked them...the gorgeous rich jewel colors drew attention!

Cobalt blue feathers with pearls dangles...

Gorgeous purple feathers with dyed jade dangle...

I'm not a fan of green but I've been drawn to it more and more recently...nice rich green with dyed turquoise dangle...

These are dyed Guinea feathers ...they have been sanitized and the color is permanent, in case you were wondering!

Starfish, lapis and scrap!

I managed to take a few photos yesterday on my iPhone...I was at my studio and forgot to bring my camera...it was either go home or give the iPhone a try. I'd taken a few photos with it a few weeks ago so I felt it was worth a try.

You know the iPhone actually takes good photos, in fact all I did to these photos below was crop them! That is amazing...my camera has never taken "great" photos" I always thought it was the operator but now I'm not so sure. With my camera I could take 10 photos, sometimes more, of something before I took a photo I could use...all of these are first shots...while not perfect they are much better than what I usually get from my camera!

My signature starfish...cut out, stamped, brushed finish and tumbled on a sterling silver chain.

As most of you know I'm a fan of cobalt blue...these lapis stones are gorgeous...I only had four stones like this...the first pair of earrings sold so I made these...they could be mine, you just never know? I've always liked this particular style but was a bit unsure of making the ear wires...they actually were not difficult once I sat down and thought about it.

Another "scrap" piece...fine silver fused together.

By the way the starfish came from the east coast...my daughter brought them back for me when she visited there last summer with her family!

Have a great day!

Finally

Hello...

As you might have noticed...I've been away since the beginning of February...I've spent the last little while since my return catching up on boring issues!

I've finally made it back to my blog...

Last fall my Mother happened to see a onyx and black swarovski dangle bracelet that I was wearing(love dangles) and she thought she would like one in brown...she loves brown over black. So when I went to see her this winter I brought her this brown pearl & swarovski, sterling silver bracelet...she rarely ever asks for anything so when she does I'm on it!

She loved it but, has arthritis in her hands and found the claw too difficult...I used this swivel claw as I thought it might work well for her but it didn't so I changed the claw to a magnetic clasp and safety chain...I checked out a local bead store and found a nice strong clasp...I've not had a great deal of luck finding strong magnetic clasps lately. I order them online and I'm often disappointed in the strength when they arrive. If anyone can recommend where I can purchase strong magnetic clasps I appreciate it!

I'm an earring and bracelet person...without either I don't feel properly dressed when I go out...and I'm also one of those who likes my earrings to coordinate with something I'm wearing. (I know, I know, but I do) I decided rather than bring my whole earring collection I would bring one of my favorite pair of sterling silver earrings, they go with almost anything...I then made a pair of long kidney wires, after which I wire wrapped Bali beads, white, dark pink & lime green pearls, onyx, dyed purple & magenta jade, denim something or other, I forget the stone and sodalite...these are colors I wear most often/packed.
Worked for me...simplified the earring packing...now all I have to do is simplify the close issue!!!!

Hello...

It's been awhile...so... I thought I would post a few photos of new pieces for your enjoyment. I've just received the components to make the sapphire earrings I mentioned in the last post, once they are done I will post the photo...it will be at the end of next week...but for now...

A stunning coral necklace and matching earrings...both finished with sterling silver components.

Delicate Kyanite rondelles spaced with sterling silver curved tubes and finished with a sterling silver lobster claw...this bracelet easily goes from day to evening. Don't forget the Kyanite dangle!

Lava rock, obsidian, and interesting black and white resin beads combined make for a bracelet that can be worn with just about anything!

Check back soon for the sapphire earrings as well as the September Birthstone of the Month...

DeWanda here I come!

I've found another venue to sell my jewels...DeWanda.com...it is based out of Europe, Germany to be exact... the products must be and I quote "unique, customizable and/or handmade, made or designed by you and are neither mass-produced nor imported"...sounds reasonable to me!

Presently there isn't a listing fee, but that is coming once they reach a specific size, with a certain number of buyers... they don't reveal what this fee is just yet...they do say that the listing fees won't happen before April 1st, 2008. For the time being sellers pay a 5% fee upon a sale and there isn't any listing time limit...but I have a feeling that may be coming as well!

There are French German and English listings...you may list in all three sections if you know the languages. The fees are in EUR and I've noticed that some people find that confusing...I used EX to help with the conversion. I've only listed two items so far...not sure how long I'll stay there or how many items I'll list...

Above is the first item I listed on DeWanda...my second try at the branch technique, copper wire with aqua blue freshwater pearls...my first attempt was a pair of earrings, I wanted to try something small to gain some experience with the technique. Next I'd like to try a sterling silver necklace...

Below is my second item I listed...a tiny pair of 9mm lampwork beads done in the jazzy tiger colors. These beads are wire wrapped in sterling silver, hanging from SS ear hooks, from which are haning hand forged sterling silver square wire rings...Funky and Fun wouldn't you say!!!DeWanda looks like an interesting place, with its forums and blogs, they have Pinboards where you keep your favorites, you can "pin" an item as well as heart it...much the same as Etsy. Of course I haven't taken the time to go over the site well but I will in the next little while. The day I signed up I saw three Etsians with shops at DaWanda...small world!!!
