Birthstone of the Month ~ August ~ Peridot (Olivine)

This striking green stone is also called Chrysolite and in the mineralogy world it is known as a variety of stone from the mineral family Olivine. It is thought the name Peridot comes from the Arabic word faridat which means "gem".   This beauty only comes in various shades of green, pale yellowish green, olive green, bottle green or a vibrant apple green, which is the most sought after, any shades of brown decrease the value of the stone.  In Pakistan, near the Afghan border you will find large Kashmir peridot stones which are the best for cutting, possessing intense striking color, which of course makes them expensive.  Most of the worlds Peridot, 80 to 95%, come from the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona, being mined by the Native Americans…finer quality gems come from Myanmar (formaerly Burma) and Egypt.  Other locations where peridot can be found are Australia, Brazil, China, South Africa, Hawaii, New Mexico and Zaire.

I'm including the definitions of igneous and metamorphic rocks as I think it helps to understand what these words mean...
Metamorphic Rocks
"The American Heritage Science Dictionary: 1. relating to metamorphosis. 2. Geology: Relating to rocks that have undergone metamorphism. Metamorphic rocks are formed when igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks undergo a physical change due to extreme heat and pressure. These changes often produce folded layers or banding in the rocks, and they can also cause pockets of precious minerals to form. The folds and banding can be produced by incomplete segregation of minerals during re-crystallization, or they can be inherited from pre-existing beds in sedimentary rocks or pre-existing layers in igneous rocks. The precious minerals can form as the result of re-crystallization when the rocks undergoing metamorphism are subjected to changes in pressure and temperature.

“Igneous: "
adjective
1. Geology...produced under conditions involving intense heat, as rocks of volcanic origin, or rocks crystallized from molten magma. 2. of, pertaining to, or characteristics of fire.
Intrusive Igneous Rock: forms beneath the surface of the volcano

Extrusive Igneous Rock: forms on the surface volcano"
Peridot, formed in the earth’s mantle, 20 to 55 miles inside a volcano…they are found in extrusive igneous rock forms, as a result of magma reaching the surface of the volcano, either from eruption, or cracks, fissures or as lava or ash.  It can also form in metamorphic rocks.   In other words it is found in the rocks formed by volcanoes.  The striking green color of the peridot comes from chemical composition of the stone (iron) itself and not from some other sources such as impurities.   Peridot is transparent but often includes some form of inclusion, they appear as spots or lines, and are naturally occurring deposits of such things as silica glass, biotite mica, and small crystals of pyrope garnet and spinal.   While lovely, the peridot is not a brilliant stone, it may have the appearance of glass or even look greasy…the stone may have a cat's eye or star effect but this is extremely rare.  Treatments, such as oiling or polymer filler may be used to improve the look of the stone, by decreasing the visibility of flaws. Care must be taken with the peridot as it is tends to burst under pressure, it is sensitive to heat and is not resistant to acids...so keep away from household cleaners, steam, hair spray, etc.

Stones of Interest:
  • A 319ct peridot found on the island of Zabargad is now in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.
  • Cut stones from a meteorite that fell in 1749 in eastern Siberia are now in Russia.
  • 192.75 carat peridot stone belonging to the Czar is in the Diamond Registry in Moscow
Information of Interest:

  • Historians wonder if the gems worn by Cleopatra were actually peridot and not emeralds…
  • Some wear this stone as they believe it brings success, peace and good luck
  • It is the gift for the 16th wedding anniversary.
  • It is one of the few stones that comes in one color only
  • In ancient Egypt on an island called Zeberget mining for peridot was done at night as it was said the gemstone couldn’t be seen well during the day.
  • I’ve seen the phonetic spelling as per-i-doe and per-i-dot…so not sure which is correct, I do think both are accepted.
  • Associated with light
  • Generally a transparent gem
  • Ancient records document peridot being mined back as far as 1500 B.C.
  • While it can be…this stone is generally not treated or enhanced
  • Relatively inexpensive in price
  • All be it rare, peridot have also been found in meteors
  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, mild soap and water will clean this stone
  • Cracks easily so be gentle with it…

More Photos!!

The first two pictures are of an absolutely stunning pair of ruby earrings...
These earrings were a custom order from a friend who supplied the rubies which came directly from Burma, everything else is gold filled while the ball wires are gold...simply wonderful!!!
I will be making a similiar pair of sapphire earrings, in sterling silver, for this same person in the next couple of days and will post a picture when finished!

This piece is part of the Heart & Stroke Foundation collection I do...a hand cut, hammered, and sanded/finished sterling silver heart attached to which is a tiny Swarovski clear crystal heart, hanging from a large sterling silver oval link chain...

Aventurine nuggets and pendant, wrapped with silver plated wire

Hand cut, hammered, sanded/finished sterling silver dangles hanging from hand shaped sterling silver ear wires...

I love the color of these Swarovski crystals...Bali beads, sterling silver tubes and a sterling silver toggle finish this bracelet...

This is a great set...hand cut, stamped and sanded/finished sterling silver circles, the pendant is hanging from a sterling silver chain...the smaller circles are hanging from sterling silver hand formed ear wires...

Red and silver...a striking combination...coral, resin and glass beads are all wrapped with Argentium silver...from which hangs a sterling silver heart...again part of the Heart & Stroke Foundation series...

I've had people say these look like silver fish...simple but they do make a statement...all sterling silver, hand shaped...

A versatile two strand necklace and earrings...front and center is a great lampwork bead, with soladite nuggets, resin and glass beads, on silver coated wire, finished with sterling silver cones... matching earrings are included...

Cobalt blue lampwork beads and white glass dangles...wire wrapped and hanging from sterling silver ear wires...
Hope you've enjoyed the latest photos...
PS...Watch for the post I will be doing in the near future regarding the Heart & Stroke Foundation Series...

Taking Pictures Outside!!

I'm a vendor at a market every Saturday rain or shine until October... this past Saturday was warm and sunny so I decided to try my hand at taking a few photos outside. I've been having a great deal of trouble taking pictures that I'm happy with... I've been told outside provides the best lighting. I have a great little camera, a Sony SuperShot DSC-W8O... that isn't my problem,...a part of my problems is the lighting. I purchased a "light box" but I just received it so I haven't had a chance to see how I do with it. I attempted to make a light box but lets just say my artistic talent lies elsewhere!

These pieces I'm posting today are a small sample of what I've been working on in the last couple of weeks...these are different from my fall and winter pieces...light and funfor the summer as we change our jewelry type with the season!

This piece is made with stunning tourmaline rondelles, wire wrapped around a sterling silver pendant, hanging from a sterling silver chain...

The colors are good but I've not yet managed to capture the sparkle of the gems...could be more crisp and clear!

This next piece is a gold plated fancy ball chain, with a lab created quartz briolette which has been wire wrapped with gold plated wire, along with a summery starfish! The color is good on this photo!

I enjoy making ear wires...something different than the traditional ear wires!
These are stunning Labradorite rondelles hanging from handmade sterling silver wires...again I haven't managed to capture the sparkle of the gem!

How about stars and a lightening bolt in sterling silver?

What woman wouldn't like a simple pair of pearls on a fancy sterling silver wire...dress up or down!

I've begun to work with gold filled wire recently, which I enjoy...completely different feel to it compared to sterling silver wire. I've paired these handmade wires with pretty Kyanite gems... while the earrings color is good, the back ground is a little blue!

These earrings are made from one piece of gold filled wire...delicate swirls ending in the ear wire! I have a pair of these in silver which I wear all the time!

These next three pieces I made from sterling silver sheet hanging from a leather cord...cut, polished and tumbled.

Simple but fun pieces for the summer! My first Dog Tag 001!

I love what this one says..."live, love, laugh"...I plan to make more of these with different sayings/words.

Can't forget three summer favorites... such fun pieces... each one making their own statement!
A beautiful green brass butterfly hanging from vermeile chains...which is gold plating over sterling silver.

A lovely brass dragonfly, hanging from vermeile chains!

Not to be left out is the ever popular brass octopus, hanging from leather cords!

I've been trying my hand at wire wrapping pendants in the last couple of weeks... which have been well received. I make them in both gold filled and sterling silver, naturally these are one of a kind as making two identical is not likely...here are three chokers I took pictures of on Saturday...
The first two are gold filled wire, hanging on a leather cored...

This one is sterling silver wire, with a delicate white pearl, hanging from a leather cord...I often add a pearl or a gem as I feel it adds a little something special!

This trendy necklace is made with interesting green/blue/gold glass rectangles spaced with brass ovals, finished with a brass toggle!

For the most part I feel the pieces look reasonably crisp and clear, the back grounds are somewhat gray or a touch of blue...while I'm not completely happy with the results I see improvement, which is what I was hoping for ...if I have time next Saturday I'll take more, possibly with a different back ground color...after I took these on Saturday I read a post that was asking for input on background colors...most of the people polled preferred colored of some kind over white...let me know what you think??? I would appreciate knowing your thoughts!

"Birthstone of the Month"

Stunning "Aquamarine" crystal from
Minas Gerias, Brazil

Picture courtesy of Orbital Joe click the crystal to view more of his stunning photos!

From the beginning of time we adorned ourselves with accessories, which are often some form of jewelry using metal, sterling silver, gold and everything in between. Some of the most stunningly dramatic pieces are designed with "gemstones".

Every woman has a favorite gemstone…I have many!!!
This is the first of a monthly article entitled “Birthstone Of The Month”…March is the fascinating “Aquamarine”, which is also the gemstone for the Zodiac sign Scorpio. It is the suggested gift for the 16th and 19th wedding anniversary …some say it has positive influences in love and relationships.

The name for this gemstone is fitting, “aqua” Latin “water, marina, Latin “sea”, because of the green, blue-green to blue colors, with the blue being the most sought after and valuable. This gemstone is a member of the beryl (mineral) family, which comes in many shades starting with pure beryl being colorless, green (emerald), yellow, greenish yellow blue to blue green, red and pink.
Aquarmarine from the Gilgit area of Pakistan, picture courtesy of "Orbital Joe"

Lower qualities gemstones are often found greenish but with heat treatment of 725 F to 850F (450C) the color can be permanently changed to blue, care must be taken in the heating, as anything higher will cause discoloration. Aquamarine is 7.5-8 in hardness and is brittle…working with it requires sensitivity to this fact.

Aquamarine is found in Australia, (Queensland), Burma (Myanmar), China, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and the United States but the most important location is Brazil.

The largest gemstone quality aquamarine was found in Marambaya, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910 weighing 243 lbs., (110.5kg), 18 in. (48.5 cm) long and 15.5 (42 cm) in diameter…the many stones it was cut into accounted for 100,000cts…can you imagine???

Aquamarine is complemented by both gold and sterling silver, (both bright and oxidized)…and makes for wonderful pieces of jewelry!
